Cruise Deals

by Admin 8/29/2009 9:50:00 PM
It was another beautiful day on Grand Bahama today and I managed to spend an hour on the beach. Since Discovery Sun is going into wet dock next month a lot of crew are excited because they will be going on vacation. I will also be taking a break and will be spending my time in Fort Lauderdale. Once Discovery Sun resumes sailing in October we have some really great deals to sail to Grand Bahama. You can take a one day cruise from Fort Lauderdale over to Grand Bahama Island for as little as $19.99 per person, check out Discovery’s web page for the details.

working on a tan....

by Admin 8/28/2009 9:05:00 PM
I had a really peaceful afternoon on Grand Bahama today. Discovery Sun docked about 40 minutes ahead of schedule. I took advantage of the extra time and went for a quick run before heading out to the beach for an hour. The weather was beautiful and the ocean was nice and warm. I hope that I can make this my routine over the next week, so that I have a bit of a tan when I sign off.

Early Sailing

by Admin 8/27/2009 11:34:00 AM
I had quite a pleasant day off yesterday and was able to run some much needed errands. It is hard to get everything done when you only have one day, but I am getting the hang of it. Discovery Sun sailed early this morning, which means early arrival on Grand Bahama and more time on the island for our one day Bahamas cruise passengers. The weather is beautiful and we have already sold quite a few tickets for the Snorkel Adventure. I am planning on having a light lunch at Pier One restaurant which is just across from where Discovery Sun docks.

Back to School

by Admin 8/24/2009 10:07:00 PM
Today is the first day back at school for kids in Florida and I can really see the difference on the ship. For the past two months we have had large amounts of children onboard Discovery Sun and the kids club has been packed.  Since it was a bit quieter today, I was planning on spending a few hours on the beach this afternoon. Unfortunately about an hour before arrival on Grand Bahama it started to rain and spoiled my plans. I did however make good use of my time and did a little exercise. The weather forecast for tomorrow is better, so fingers crossed I will be relax on the beach in the afternoon.

National Symbols of the Bahamas

by Admin 8/22/2009 9:30:00 PM

If you are traveling with Discovery Cruise Line you may be interested in a few facts about Grand Bahama. Remember, there are many vacation options to chose from when sailing with Discovery Cruise Line including one day cruises, all inclusive vacations, Club Grand Bahama and 2 & 3 night cruises.

The Bahamian Flag
The colors of the Bahamian flag are black, gold and aquamarine. The black represents the Bahamian people, the gold represents the sun and the aquamarine is a symbol of our crystal clear waters.

The National Flower
The yellow elder (Tecoma stans) is a tubular yellow flower with ultra-fine red stripes on each petal. It grows wild in The Bahamas, but is usually improved through cultivation. The Yellow Elder Tree may reach a height of nearly twenty feet. The blooming period is from October to December, diminishing by March.

The National Tree
Lignum Vitae or 'tree of life' (Guaiacum sanctum) is a very heavy wood characterized by clusters of small blue flowers at the branch tips.

The Bahamas Coat of Arms (pictured right)

The National Bird
Flamingo: Its pink, it has long legs and we have a lot of them.

National Anthem
The National Anthem is a beautiful song by Timothy Gibson (1903-1978): MARCH ON, BAHAMA-LAND.

Pledge of Allegiance
"I Pledge my allegiance to the flag and to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas For which it stands, one people united in love and service."

Last Minute Vacations

by Admin 8/14/2009 9:52:00 PM
Discovery Sun has been very busy the last couple of days and it will continue to be through the rest of the weekend. It seems lots of people are taking last minute family vacations to Grand Bahama, whether it be on a one-day cruise or a longer all-inclusive vacation. The weather has been fantastic and snorkeling and beach tours have been very popular. Some of the cruise staff went snorkeling a few days ago and were in awe of the hundreds of tropical fish they saw. I have just been too busy to make it off the ship to enjoy any of the island activities, but I plan on taking time out on Sunday, even if I just hit the beach for a couple of hours.

Cruise From Fort Lauderdale

by Admin 8/11/2009 12:01:00 PM
The cruise from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Bahama was great yesterday; I met some really wonderful people. Unfortunately on the return trip I wasn’t feeling too good and found myself having to go to bed early. I am still feeling a bit out of sorts this morning, but hope that I will feel better as the day goes on. A few of today’s passengers have pre-booked the Club Grand Bahama package, which as I have mentioned before is an all inclusive program, specially designed to allow vacationers to experience an entire destination at a great value. The program is going really well and is becoming quite popular. Well, I am off to breakfast, fingers crossed it will make be feel better.

Miss Universe Pageant

by Admin 8/9/2009 8:06:00 PM
Grand Bahama is hosting a very special event this evening, the swimsuit presentation of the Miss Universe pageant. The pageant is scheduled to take place on the great lawn of the Our Lucaya Resort, under the theme “Perfection in Motion”. This pageant will bring together beautiful women representing 88 countries from around the world. This event will be a great boost for tourism on Grand Bahama as it will be featured as a destination to an estimated 184 countries. A good friend of mine that works for the tourism board has been working hard preparing for the event and I hope it all goes really well for her.

Lazy Sunday

by Admin 8/2/2009 10:06:00 PM
The cruise from Fort Lauderdale was beautiful today the ocean was like glass. I had big plans for this afternoon on Grand Bahama, but something about Sunday’s makes me feel lazy. I was going to go to the beach, then I thought about going for a run but all I ended up doing was watching a movie in my cabin. Quite a few one-day cruise passengers went snorkeling today and it was a perfect day for it, they all had a fantastic time. Maybe tomorrow I will feel a little more energetic.
