Peterson Cay Kayak & Snorkel Tour

by Admin 3/22/2009 7:22:00 PM

The Peterson Cay Kayak & Snorkel Tour is one of my favorites. Peterson Cay, one of the smallest National Parks in the Bahamas is one mile off the southern shore of Grand Bahama. The Bahamas National Trust manages Peterson Cay National Park and all other national parks in The Islands of The Bahamas.

Access to Peterson Cay National Park is by
boat only, hence the Kayak portion of this tour. As you approached Peterson Cay your guide will lead you with extreme care so that you paddle through the shallow sandy areas away from coral reefs.

The
snorkeling
there is excellent. Clear blue shallow waters are perfect for people that are either not strong swimmers or first timers. While snorkeling around the coral and sunken rocks you will see schools of tropical fish, soft corals and sea fans.

After snorkeling you can relax on the
beach
, however there are very few shaded areas, so lots of sunscreen is recommended. A light lunch and refreshments are included in the tour, but you may also want to bring along some drinking water.

Before heading back to your kayaks for the 30-minute kayak back to shore any garbage that you may have had must be packed up. This helps to keep Peterson Cay and the reefs clean.

This tour runs every day except Monday and due to limited space is often sold out. I highly recommend you make reservations ahead of time at the Discovery Sun Tour Desk.

Robinson Crusoe Beach Party

by Admin 3/13/2009 10:09:00 AM

I found this video of the Robinson Crusoe Beach Party which I thought I would share - I have done this excursion a couple of times and had a blast - you get to snorkel and then hang out at this great beach with lunch and all you can drink! Needless to say, I had one too many! This is a great activity for spring break in the Bahamas!

Pelican Point

by Admin 3/9/2009 5:12:00 PM

This weekend I was lucky enough to spend the afternoon with a lady by the name of "Smiling Pat" and our Discovery Cruise Director, Samantha Penny. We had a fantastic day! We were picked up from the pier and driven all the way out to the native village of Pelican Point - there are less than 40 people that inhabit this beautiful village and, until 20 years ago, the only way to get there was by dirt road. The locals were so freindly and hospitable! We even learned how to weave straw baskets! The misister's wife cooked us a lunch, which consisted of peas and rice and the BEST lobster I have ever tasted!!!!!

There are also beach villas avaialable for rent, right on the beach - we only wished that we could have spent more time there:

So if you want a real native get-away off the beacon track that no-one has yet discovered - this is the place to go!

Here are some pictures:
