Touring Grand Bahama

Many people are looking for the best way to see Grand Bahama and want to do it in the most economical way. The onboard shore excursion desk offers a three-hour tour of Grand Bahama called the Bahamian Getaway for just $29.95. In my opinion this is the easiest way of seeing the island with an experienced local guide. Grand Bahama is 96 miles long and 17 miles at its widest point. Although the island is quite small, you will not find an organized tour that will take you around the whole island. There are tours of the East End and West End and then tours that take you to the main point of interest around the center of the island, that is what the Bahamian Getaway does. You will get a wealth of history and geography of the island as you are being taken around and there will be several stops for you to get off the bus and have a look around the different areas. The highlight of the Bahamian Getaway is the guided tour of the Garden of the Groves, one of Grand Bahamas number one tourist attractions. This beautiful botanical garden is a must see during your stay and the $15 entrance and guide fee is included in the price of the tour when purchased onboard at the Shore Excursion Desk. I am asked all the time, “Can’t I just get a cab driver to take me around for the day?” The answer is yes you can, but this is not a third world country and you can’t just offer them $50 to take you around for the day. It is a very strong taxi union on Grand Bahama and the government sets rates that all cab drivers follow. You can expect to pay $45 per hour and $22.50 for each additional ½ hr or part thereof and that will not include admittance fees to any of the parks or gardens that you may stop at along the way.

I was promoted to the position of Cruise Director in 1999 and continued to sail daily to Grand Bahama Island until 2003, when I began working in the Miami office as Entertainment & Communications Manager. I still continue to sail to Grand Bahama at least one day per week.
